Tai Chi Student Roy Hanney returns to China

This June a regular student at the Yangshuo Tai Chi and Kung Fu School will return to southern China to spend the summer training with us. We asked Roy what he likes about the school and what he wants to learn this summer.

Roy Hanney Training at Yangshuo Tai Chi School China“Well I first came to the school in 2009 and spent a week learning the short form. Then I came back for longer the following summer to learn the Laojia and stayed for 6 weeks. In the UK where I normally, live I train at the Seven Stars Yoga and Tai Chi School in Portsmouth. The teacher there, Andy Cullen is very experienced and we learn Yang Style with him. Last year I started teaching beginners under his supervision and I hope to do more of this when I get back to the UK. Making the change from Yang Style to Chen style has been very challenging but also very rewarding”.
“The important thing about the school for me is that the quality of teaching is very high. Master Fu always makes an effort to coach you when you need it and the attention you get from the assistant instructors is excellent. Of course the sense of community there is really nice as you live, eat and sleep with each other 24/7. One of the things I am very much looking forward to is a late afternoon swim in the river Li after training”.

“The long term aim for me is to get to a level where I can teach back in the UK. There are a few Chen style schools in England but not many following the lineage from GM Chen Zhenglai. This makes it difficult to get good instruction unless I come to China. With any luck I may get the chance to learn the Laojia Erliu this summer and for someone my age and fitness that is going to be very challenging”.

We all look forward to seeing you again Roy and hope we can make your stay this summer a worthwhile one.

Omeida Chinese Academy gets a taste of Tai Chi

On a sunny afternoon The Yangshuo Tai Chi and King Fu School invaded the street outside Omeida Chinese Academy to give students an incredible demonstration of the ancient practice of Tai Chi. The performance started with the graceful, flowing, movements, designed to encourage a channeling of inner energy and work with the opposing forces of the Yin and the Yang. Six students went through the basic flow to show the basis of Tai Chi.

Omeida Chinese AcademyIndividual performances followed, incorporating the use of a straight sword. Traditionally, students study the weapons as a way of extending the Qi they have already developed. This requires the participant to bring their study to a higher level as positions are modified and the body and sword become one as do the mind and sword.

To demonstrate the idea of opposing force, the Tai Chi students maintained a block stance and encouraged Omeida’s students to try and knock them down by pushing at the waist. The stance is very strong and the holder watches his opponent to see which way he is moving and responds accordingly. Many students tried, and even with a difference in physical size, no Omeida student was able to knock down a Tai Chi student. Even the strongest looking student, failed when positioned properly, causing everyone laugh and cheer.

As the performance came to an end, Omedia’s students were invited to try the meditative flow of Tai Chi forthemselves. Fifteen students lined up in the street and were led through the movements. Some had tried Tai Chi before, but many had not. It was agreed that the movements left participants feeling rejuvenated and calmer. Many students said that they would like to incorporate Tai Chi into their daily lives as a way to relieve stress.

Omeida Chinese Academy has partnered with Master Fu’s Tai Chi and Kung Fu school to allow students more opportunity to learn about the traditional martial arts. Students will be able to see more demonstrations and participate for themselves as they learn Chinese in Yangshuo.
